Recently, Indonesian social media has been abuzz with a viral message claiming to come from the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The message alleges that citizens can earn a passive income of IDR 55,000,000 per month through a “national tax return program.” The use of a high-profile public figure's name has made the narrative even more convincing.
But is this program real? Unfortunately, it is not. This is a form of digital fraud that preys on the public through a psychological manipulation tactic known as social engineering.
Fraud Disguised as Official Communication
This type of scam is not new, but the packaging has become far more sophisticated. The attackers construct narratives that appear to originate from credible sources. In this case, the scam takes the form of a staged interview featuring fabricated quotes and images of the Minister of Finance to enhance believability.
Victims are then redirected to a suspicious website, such as FortuixAgent, and asked to make an “initial investment” of IDR 4,000,000 with the promise of an extraordinary return.
